Respect Their Way
PRINCIPLE 3 OF 10
Other people are individuals too. They may have different beliefs, cultures, traditions, food, lifestyles, rituals, relationships, values, or ways of finding happiness. You do not have to agree with someone to respect their dignity and their right to be different. Difference is part of being human.
The explanation
Other people are individuals too. They may believe differently, live differently, eat differently, worship differently, celebrate differently, love differently, work differently, or find happiness differently. You do not have to agree with someone to respect their right to be different. Difference is not automatically a problem to solve.
In the Master Philosophy
Other people are allowed to be different. They may have different religions, philosophies, cultures, traditions, lifestyles, diets, relationships, interests, or ideas. Difference alone is not a reason for disrespect. Respect does not require agreement. You can disagree with someone’s ideas while still recognizing their dignity as a person.
How to read it
Practical interpretation
- You can disagree with an idea and still recognize the person holding it.
- Difference is not a problem waiting to be fixed.
What this does not mean
- Respect does not require agreement, approval, or silence — and it never requires you to adopt someone else's way.
