Grow Together

Principle 6 of 10

PRINCIPLE 6 OF 10

Individuality does not mean that we live alone. We share this world with other people. Where possible, contribute toward a world where people can live with dignity, freedom, safety, opportunity, and respect. Your growth does not need to require another person’s loss. Personal growth and human flourishing can exist together.

The explanation

Individuality does not mean isolation. Every person exists within a larger human world. Where possible, work toward a world in which people can live with dignity, freedom, safety, opportunity, and mutual respect. Your growth and the growth of others do not always have to compete. Personal growth and human flourishing can exist together.

In the Master Philosophy

Individual freedom exists alongside other people. My life affects other lives. Therefore, personal growth should not be understood only as personal advantage. Where possible, seek a world in which people can live with dignity, freedom, safety, opportunity, and mutual respect. Help when you can. Cooperate when cooperation is possible. Create when creation helps. Disagree without unnecessary hostility. A person does not have to become less individual in order to contribute to humanity. Individuality and togetherness can exist at the same time.

How to read it

Practical interpretation

  • Other people's growth does not have to cost you yours.
  • Cooperation, help, and disagreement without hostility are part of growing.

What this does not mean

  • It does not mean dissolving your individuality, or that everyone must converge on one way of living.
